Biblical Authority: Foundational Beliefs
(Adopted by our Deacon Board 3-31-11)
We Believe the Following about Our Purpose
We believe that Christ has called the Church of the Brethren, as a whole, to lovingly invite all who may be separated from God by their sinful choices to full reconciliation with the Father (even those who do not realize this separation). Jesus desires full redemption and gives it to all who repent and commit their lives to obedience to Him (John 8:31-32; Romans 5:10; 2 Corinthians 5:18-21).
We Believe the Following about God
We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons;
Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:18-19; Luke 3:21-22; John 10:30;
Acts 5:3-4).
We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, His bodily resurrection, His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory (Matthew 1:18 -23; Luke 24:36-43; John 1:1-3; 1:14; 2 Corinthians 5: 21; Hebrews 4:15; Revelation 19:11-13).
We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life ( John 16: 7-15; Acts 1:8; 5:3-4; Romans 8;9; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Galatians 5:22-23: Ephesians 5:18; 2 Peter 1:20-21).
We Believe the Bible is the Word of God
We believe the Bible (66 books, which means a closed canon) to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God. It is fully sufficient and supersedes all other forms of revelations for all matters of faith and practice (Matthew 5:17-18;24:35; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:2-3; 20-21).
We Believe the Following about Salvation
We believe that all have sinned and come short of God's glory. We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only those who receive Jesus Christ are born again of the Holy Spirit, and thus become children of God (John 14:6; 17-3; Acts 4:12; Romans 3:10, 23; 8:9-11; 10:9-10; Ephesians 2:8-9).
